A first-on-the-scene firefighter from the West Nyack Fire Department waits for a fire truck to arrive at a truck fire on Rt. 303 in West Nyack April 21, 2015.

The flick of a cigarette may have been the spark that lit up a truck's cargo in West Nyack Tuesday, officials said.

The back of a 1-800-Got Junk truck caught fire on Rte. 303 around 3:06 p.m., Clarkstown police Sgt. Thomas Ronan said. The fire appears to have been accidentally caused by a cigarette, he said.

Furniture in the back of the truck, which was headed to the county Solid Waste Authority transfer station on Rte. 303, was severely damaged, but the truck was able to be driven away, Ronan said.

After smelling something burning, the driver looked in his mirror and saw smoke in the container in the back of the truck, Ronan said. The driver pulled over and alerted authorities, who blocked off traffic as West Nyack firefighters extinguished the flames.
